A Brief History
The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (commonly known as Museum MACAN) is a landmark art institution located in Jakarta. It opened its doors in November 2017, becoming Indonesia’s first major museum dedicated to both modern and contemporary art.
The museum was founded by collector and businessman Haryanto Adikoesoemo (who is also connected to AKR Land Development), and draws upon his 25-year art collection which spans Indonesian and international works.
The name “MACAN” means “tiger” in Indonesian, evoking boldness and spirit in its artistic mission.

Museum MACAN’s collection features a significant mix of Indonesian, Asian and global artworks. It includes pieces by Indonesian masters like S. Sudjojono and Djoko Pekik, alongside international names such as Yayoi Kusama and Ai Weiwei.
